The Five Qualities Required for Successful Affiliate Marketing

The business of affiliate marketing is becoming more and more popular these days and many people are turning to this method of earning an income.  There are great advantages to affiliate marketing such as no time limits on your work and no bosses breathing down your neck and only the necessary tools are needed to be successful in this kind of business.

Listed below are the five basics you will not be able to do without as far as affiliate marketing is concerned.

1.  A Desire to Learn

This is the first quality you need to be in possession of along with being willing to be trained.  Working your way through areas which are unfamiliar to you can be difficult at times so the right mind set is essential and will be of invaluable help to you in the long run.

When you first start in affiliate marketing you have to keep your ears and eyes open and glean your knowledge from the experience of others as you make your way forward.

2.  The Investment of Time and Effort

The investment of time and effort is the second most important quality you must have and this involves the readiness to succeed in making your business flourish, whether or not results are seen straight away. It may well be weeks before good news is received so being eager to put in the time and effort is essential to the success of your business.

3.  Determination

Determination is the third quality you will need and if you have plans to do well in the affiliate marketing world, you need to have what it takes to constantly push yourself forward.  This plays a great part in forming your future.

4.  Discipline

You will need to discipline yourself on a daily basis in order to succeed.  Putting your heart and soul into your daily work load will ensure you are so much closer to achieving your goals and realizing your dreams.

5.  Optimism

Adopt an optimistic outlook and you are already half way there.  A display of bad attitude should never put you off from making your dreams reality and taking your whole lifestyle to a new dimension.

Always have a healthy attitude towards your business as this will help you to take the necessary steps towards your destiny.

By putting the above mentioned tips to good use you are sure to achieve things you never dreamed would be possible.  These are all qualities which success is dependent upon and before you know where you are you will be part of a business with a blossoming career in affiliate marketing.

    The only thing I would add is, pick a topic that rings your bell.

    That way you’ll be able to press on through the difficult times and stay interested.

    Great post Reed

    I think a lot of people just don’t follow a lot of these basic things and give up to easily. I know at first I tried to market too much but when I learned just to stick with one thing I became more profitable.
    Oh and I lacked discipline but not now

    Good tips Reed!

    I would give most weight to point 5 – optimism. Sometimes the spoils goes to the man who ‘thinks he can’ and never gives in!

    I would also add 6. A Thick Skin – Because we live in a world of blanket advertising, many people become immune to the efforts of affiliate marketers. And that’s being polite about it. Marketers of any types are often seen in the same light as politicians, tax collectors and hawkers of any description.

    One good idea that some savvy marketers adopt, especially in relation to their opt-in list, is that they give their subscribers free offers, useful information at no charge and generous giveaways that would normally be sold off at a healthy profit. It surprises people sometimes and it gives an overall impression that this particular marketer actually cares about his/her customers and isn’t just trying to dip in to the bank account!

    ‘Yes, but I want to make a profit, what’s wrong with a bit of good old fashioned selling?’ Well, nothing really (in my opinion) except that it is a worn-out, hackneyed, over-used, globally abused formula. It always has the money-grab element somewhere along the chain, please enter credit card details Monsieur, etc.

    Maybe I am a Maverick and perhaps I’m not going to earn my millions as fast as some but I think there is something blindingly refreshing and even magical about giving without the hope of receiving something in return! ‘But in make no business sense!’ shout many and perhaps that observation is spot on in so many ways.

    I guess that I’m thinking about contributing to the world in a way that does not hold up fiscal considerations as the ultimate prize. An old saying goes ‘to get what you want out of life help as many people as you can get what they want first’. Help others succeed in their dreams and support them all you can.

    ‘But I want the money!’, did I hear you say? Don’t we all! I think that a love of money can be very healthy when it is kept in perspective. I once heard of a story of a man (name with-held but I’m sure you can guess who I’m referring to) who spent his life preaching to the masses about not chasing strict materialistic goals, but instead, he encouraged people to ‘seek something greater within yourself and make it the first priority in your life, and all these things (worldy goods and riches) will be added unto thee!’ (I’m starting to sound a bit Baptist in my ramblings.)

    But as we know, the author of these words is still held up as the ultimate example on how to live a successful and rich life. Was he a supremely successful marketer? No, not exactly, but it is interesting to note that his philosophies on living have sold more books than all the marketing ‘greats’ put together! Donald Trump, Warren Buffet, Robert Kiyosaki, Bill Gates and any other of the big names out there in the world of money and marketing (targeting the topic at hand) don’t even run a poor second by comparison when it comes to sheer influence and global reach.

    Marketing from the heart? I don’t class myself as a strict Christian but I think that many, religiously motivated or otherwise, often overlook the fundamental aspects of what life really should be about. Giving, sharing with and loving others.

    Taking, hoarding and counting the piled-up dollars. This ethos seems to be the accepted and tried ‘cancer’ of the on-line universe. ‘But you get a free autographed copy of my biography on how I became a multi-billionaire in 672 days!’ … Rant over.

    Great post Reed.
    I think #2 is the most important for those new to affiliate marketing or doing business of any kind online, because it does take time and effort. Funny, I still see quite a few people buying bulk email lists (my spam folder attests to this) without thinking through what they’re actually doing.

    Checked the offers in your JV giveaway…some new things in there I hadn’t seen before. Good going:)

    Thanks Reed, good post.

    You know what makes me sad about affiliate marketing is that everyone tries to cover up number 2 when they are marketing their “how-to” products. You are so right — it takes time and effort. There is no easy button.

    Even though it’s someone else’s product. They give you the website. They give you the marketing tools. It doesn’t matter. Until you get really good at it, it takes time and effort.

    I think more people would stick with it and become successful if they weren’t so misled in the beginning.

    Hi Floren,

    I am glad to see that capital investment is NOT one of the factors to be successful at Affiliate Marketing.
    In fact, Affiliate Marketing, like many other profitable “brick and mortar” businesses, is a typical genuine business that rewards persistent hard work.
    Time is essence and thats why majority of people fail in businesses,offline or online. Most people are impatience enough to reap the real fruits of labour. Most people want to reap the fruits with little labour. This is perhaps the “middle class” mentality sown by the formal education system. Labour is equated to low level of education and the less successful academically.
    But the real wealth is really the product of labour, NOT the product of academia.

    Cheers.

    God bless

    Affiliate marketing is the perfect way to test a product you are considering building a business around. If it sells, you have a winner. If not, you haven’t invested in inventory or the wrong product. Good way to get a feel for what sells and get your own experience in how to sell it.

    Hi Reed,

    I couldn’t agree more. You need these five qualities to succeed in Affiliate Marketing.

    But also you need them to succeed in any other business and even in your life.

    These are crucial things that will help you to achieve whatever you want.

    Thanks,

  • Great Post Reed. I agree that all five are paramount to success.

    I’d add flexability in approach and to be approachable and as quick as you can to respond to new developments in the marketplace.

    @Thomas thanks

    @Horace keep reading this blog and you’ll find more tips

    @Rick another great tip thanks

    @Bruno yeah I would agree most people think that they can just click a button and become instantly wealthy beyond believe.

    @Jose thank you

    @David thick skin really good point that is necessary because if you aren’t getting rejected you aren’t trying

    @Tim thank you

    @2ask yes never, never, never give up

    @Georjina thank you

    @Jennifer unfortunately I think a lot of marketers believe that unless they sell a magic pill no one will buy it. This is one of the few industries where a lot of of the sellers will sell and or market in a horrible way because they don’t have the confidence and faith in their customers to do the right thing.

    @Hamid it does take some money to make good money online but of businesses you can get into I firmly believe internet marketing is the least expensive

    @Jay I think you bring up a valid point; if someone can’t make money as an affiliate of a product perhaps they shouldn’t start a business in that niche.

    @PV thank you

    @Kenny flexibility and being able to work with others is a fantastic point to add thanks

    @Wayne thank you

    Reed,

    This is so true…

    I see many people that are lazy and do not want to learn for example simple HTML which is a must to be able to create appealing websites.

    So be adventurous and learn; with the other four ingredients you will surely succeed 🙂
