Search Engine’s Who Joint Venture With Each Other

Please keep in mind I wrote this awhile back, I believe the search engines are still connected to each other this way. If someone else has new information feel free to correct me.
Search engines have changed a lot over the last several years. The technology has changed drastically and many search engines have also formed partnerships with other search engines. You may be searching on a given search engine when in reality another one could be coming up with the results.

There are many search engines in existence today. They conduct searches based on the keywords you provide them in your web content.

The Yahoo search engine gives results for Alta Vista and All The Web as well as results from its own Yahoo search engine. It also displays paid listings from what was formerly known as Overture. These listings are now obtained through Yahoo Search Marketing.

Google displays results from AOL and Netscape search engines. You can also buy paid listings from Google and they also supply them to Lycos, Netscape, Ask, HotBot, and AOL. The secondary results from Google go to the HotBot search engine. The information it collects for its directory data comes from DMOZ. All this is in addition to providing their search results.

Lycos, like Google also receive their directory data from DMOZ. They get paid listings and also secondary results from Ad Words which is a Google program. Their primary search results come from Ask.

HotBot gets their directory search results from DMOZ also. They get their secondary and paid search results with Google Ad Words. The primary search results are obtained from the Ask search engine.

Ask is another one that gets their directory listings from DMOZ. They get their paid listings from Google Adwords and the primary ones from HotBot and Lycos in addition to their results. Their secondary search results come from the Teoma search engine.

Everyone turns to the search engines if they want to find something. If you are not on the first couple of pages, you do not exist. It’s not as hard as you think to get in the results on a search. Build a good website and take the time to search some of your content on a search engine, you may be pleasantly surprised.

    Hi Reed,

it is a nice Blog but do you think really that the SE’s are copying from each other ? or are linked to get info ? All info is free on the market and you can take it from everywhere but it is all unstructured and chaotic. The search engines are only existing to make the web searchable. But then there is also no structure you get a result and you have to sort out what is usable for your own original idea/project/infomodule. At my web-site (cerne-4you.de) I said this about the searchengines (unfortunately in German language) and the only thing which is of help… you to get closer to results what you like/need to see. If there are JVs or combinations about the-from-where the info is and who-is-presenting it is of no interest. You also should mention the specialists under the SE’s which are presenting results for technics, medicines, literature, psychology etc etc. I do’nt know what MSN is ? a hybrid for mails, infos, News, games etc,etc but it is named as SE.

    Peter,

You said, “If there are JVs or combinations about the-from-where the info is and who-is-presenting it is of no interest.”

Actually, one very important thing of interest to note from this post is the fact that DMOZ is a common factor with SE’s. If one did not know this bit of information, they would not realize that one of the first things they need to do for their own websites is to register them with DMOZ.

Good info Reed. I bet a lot of people don’t know this.

    Hi Reed,
Search engines where would we be without them, one point to remember is that search engines like Google are constantly changing, with this in mind they are increasingly looking to the Social networks to beef up their appeal, and also tagging is huge at the moment.

I have found quite a few of my visitors coming from tags found on the search engines and they proliferate throughout social networks and blogs. So make sure you always have a tag cloud on you blog. And its a good idea to experiment with different options, always checking what works and what doesn’t.

Congrats on your new addition to the Reed Floren Household

Just a quick heads up Reed, your feeds format needs looking at, I have to put my glasses on to read your posts, the font is tiny!

I had no idea that Search Engines did Joint Ventures – how enlightening, thanks Reed! If this is the case, then what is the point in submitting to each one, after all, if they ‘borrow’ from one another!?

The following is an article I wrote about Search Engines and their ranking methods. In many cases you have to get your checkbook out if you want the best position for your site! (The world never changes huh!?)

The usual case is that spiders examine the whole of the Internet, beginning from known pages and checking out all links, and also look over sites that are hand-submitted. Google is still pretty much like that. With a high PageRank, a website will be spidered more frequently and in greater detail.

However, search engines are attemting to inspire owners of websites to spend money for the privelege of having their pages spidered. Teoma’s index is very diffcult to get into without paying a fee, and Inktomi’s isn’t that simple either. And even if you do get into Inktomi for free, they will take an extended time to respider, when you pay them fees they respider constantly. An upside of regular respidering is that you can alter your site to appear higher in their rankings of relevance, then observe if your tweaking has worked.

Last point, it is possible to appear on a search page if you pay a fee, meaning, your link shows when someone does a search on a specific keyword or keyphrase. Google makes it quite clear which results (at the top or on the right of the page) are paid; the competition perhaps do not-so-good a job.

Paid search results are usually all pay-per-click and are keyword based. The advertiser spends money with the search engine vendor, a specific amount each time an ad is clicked on, this charge having been decided by an auction of each keyword or keyphrase.

Congratulations to you Reed, and Marissa, am hoping that the new arrival is here safe and sound!

    Kind Regards,
    David I. Braybrooke.

    Hey Reed,
More great info from you,as usual.I was aware tthat te search enginess probably linked up together in the manners you describe. To my mind,it’s probably a good thing with some real advantages.

To Horace – you want to know what to do to make money. In a nutshell:-write and submit articles;set up blogs;visit forums.Note that I’ve said everything in plural. When you’ve done all of the above, just keep repeating the process – EVERY DAY for EACH TASK! Good luck.

For anyone else out there, internet marketing IS a job – just like any other job. It’s advantages are that HEAPS of diligent work done correctly NOW can set you up for a much easier time of it later on.

Reed’s advice is always spot on.Pay attention to him.

    Cheers,
    Lynda

Hey Reed, I recently changed my static website to a wordpress Blog and when I search the discription is still from the old site. It’s frustrating to see how slow Google is to index pages. Yahoo on the other hand has already revised the description. SE are really a science that need to be studied and kept up with as they change and evolve.

    Hi Reed,

Thanks for the info. Though I think pretty much all information is useful, I’m just wondering, as a marketer, how this info is helpful to me. Is it good for us that search engines share? Should I just focus more on getting list with DMOZ?

Anyway, thanks again for the information.

    Have a great week,

    Hi Reed,
tks for your SE info and the discussions which followed about DMOZ or SE which was first and what is DMOZ. It has nothing to do with what marketeers are doing and if it is necessary to know who is copying or doing JV’s essential is to get relevant info and the valuable content on your website. I stay to it >it is of no interest who is in a JV or who is copying< the worst case when they copy from each other and I have no independet source to validate the content then you have to think what you have to do with the info from SEs. This might ,be when you want to read background info
    about why and where.

@Tacs lol, it’s not fun having trouble reading the screen though. I’ve had glasses since first grade and it’s a pain

@David good points that some search engines are charging for submissions. Thank you

    @Lynda thank you

@Jussi keep us posted on your success

@Reach yeah it can be a little slow, try pinging the blog and getting some other sites to link to you. Removed the Jeff Mills video

@Terry getting listed in dmoz and getting other sites to link to you can help alot

@Peter it’s more of a licensing issue with the search engines from my understanding

Interesting to know that search engines also do some kind of joint ventures. In my opinion every one should target only one search engine that is google and if you rank well for Google you will rank well in other SERP’s also.
