How Many Checks From Affiliate Marketing Do You Want?

Affiliate Marketing is one of the easier ways to make money over the web. Affiliate marketing is a business partnership on the revenue sharing model between a merchant with products or services to offer and an affiliate who is interested in marketing these products or services.

Affiliates promote and advertise the wares offered by the merchant and is paid a commission for each referral they make which leads to a purchase.  Until a sale is made, no commission will be received by the affiliate in most affiliate marketing programs. The affiliate may be paid per sale, by the number of visits they direct to the merchant (called pay-per-click) or per visitor who signs up for a mailing list (pay-per-lead).

An affiliate program can bring income to affiliates which may be anywhere between a few dollars to thousands. The earning potential of an affiliate marketer is limited only by the amount of effort the affiliate is willing to put into their marketing work. It’s a great way to make money online and best of all, you don’t need to make or store the products yourself. You can make money merely by advertising the merchant’s products and services effectively. The profits usually are not large at first; but they can snowball as you get things going.

To maximize profits, affiliate marketers have plenty of options. Ask affiliate marketers how many affiliate checks they’d like to receive and the answer will invariably be “as many as I can”. A lot of affiliate checks are small; $25 or less.

Some affiliate checks are much larger, being in the thousands. In the ling run, these checks can add up to a truly impressive number. You won’t make a fortune overnight though; it will take determination and hard work on your part. You have to find ways to drive large amounts of traffic to your site if you want to get the conversion rate which will lead to large commissions for you.

How many affiliate checks do you want to receive? Of course, as many as you can. Is affiliate marketing as easy as it might seem? If you join up with a lot of different affiliate programs, does this mean that you are assured a large number of affiliate checks which will equal wealth? Sadly, no. Many newcomers to the affiliate marketing world assume that more must be better and sign up for many different programs. Since it’s easy (and almost always free) to sign up, they make the assumption that there’s nothing to lose, so why not? The problem is that they then do not give their affiliate marketing efforts the amount of time and attention they need to generate real income for them. This means that they are more than likely to be disappointed with the return they receive from these affiliate programs.

If you want to have multiple streams of income, you should focus on one affiliate program at a time. Pick a product r service you feel strongly about and can do a good job of promoting. The best affiliate programs to get involved in are ones where you personally us the product. Prospects will be able to feel your enthusiasm, making you a more credible source and a better salesperson for the product or service.

Once you are making a good amount of income from this first affiliate program, then you can get involved in a second; remember to put just as much effort into your second endeavor. Joining too many affiliate programs at once without giving a lot of attention to any is not a viable strategy for generating multiple streams of income.    Remember, the idea is not just to get a lot of affiliate checks, but to get a lot of large affiliate checks. That’s why you shouldn’t move on to another affiliate program until you are satisfied with thee income you are making from the one you already are involved in. The way to succeed in affiliate marketing is with determination and work – this is the key to getting those big affiliate checks you want.

Thats the problem with affiliate programs most don’t stick to one to make it profitable. I’ve have done it myself and i’m sure there are many more that will just jump from program to program and wonder why they don’t make any money.

I centainly agree with Bruno. Been there, done that.
Funny thing checks… I’m from Finland and checks have not been used here in ages. So for me to join a program, I’d choose one that has other payment options. Like Reed pointed out, most checks are $25 or less. To cash in a check of $25 would cost that $25 so it would leave you with only a receipt to give your accountant. I don’t know what the situation is elsewhere in Europe, but affiliate marketers do come from all over the world.
Reed, how about a post about the countries affiliate marketers come from. Do you have any idea?

    Hi Reed:

I have to agree, multiple streams of income is the way to go, I personally receive dozens of affiliate checks each month.

A word of warning though, distraction and saturation are two of the greatest foes that work from homers face. Make a commitement to a single program FIRST, treat it like a business, see it through to actually breaking even or becoming profitable and then look to expand your sources of income.

Affiliate marketing is a sweet life that I wouldn’t swap for any other job I know of.

    Hi Reed,
    Yes its very true indeed.
I think the main problem with probably the 95 % of affiliates that fail is that they jump from program to program, possibly and partly due to information overload, lack of Focus and even the amount of noise in the marketplace.

I know I was the same, despite buying up almost every course that came up, sometimes making things even worse.

I read somewhere recently that whenever a new product is being launched – by all means look at it and if it does not fit into your overall business plan – bypass it! Problem is that the Sales pages are sooooo good these days especially with IM products.

I must say though that getting multiple affiliate checks is definitely getting easier if you do have a solid plan and pursue it particularly with CMS platforms like WordPress taking a front line in SEO terms.

Talking about checks – Even with an advanced banking system – I remember taking a clickbank check into my bank and they charged me almost $25 to cash it . Its crazy.

Many thanks for your great content

    Hi All:

If you are looking for affiliates to market your products, try using the many affiliate directories that are out there. Do a search on Google for “affiliate programs” or “affiliate program directories” and you will find great resources such as AssociatePrograms.com, WhichAffiliate.com, Affiliate Scout and more.

Reed, hope you don’t mind me answering that one. 🙂

Bruno and Reed hit it on the head. One of the hardest things to do is pick a program…stick with it…and once it’s working you can then move on to the next opportunity.

Focus gets lost easily when we’re constantly bombarded with opportunity after opportunity.

I’ve also been there, done that and it took me a long time to understand why it wasn’t working. I went from opportunity to opportunity and never really completed the entire process on any of them.

It was only when I became focused on one thing at a time that I truly saw results. This is a hard lesson for almost everyone new to online marketing.

  • This is to John Marena. 🙂

John, I’m fairly new to offering an affiliate program, but here’s what I do. I get to know people within my own industry, and invite them in. I’m right in the middle of preparing a product launch, and I’ve sent out emails to a number of people I already know…and soon to others I don’t know…asking if they are open to reviewing the product, and then inviting them in to become a JV partner as well.

I’ve supported enough people with their various launches, so my list of people to ask has grown.

I have no idea what your products are, but if you are able to offer a mini-version as a free report to others within your industry as a bonus to their products, that can support you to establish some more relationships.

Hope that gives you a few ideas to play with!

Affiliate programs are great, and can become a gold mine if you apply the gold mine rule.

Only mine for Gold, decide on your niche, and if a product does not fit in it – loose it, its better than loosing the gold!

Get as many affiliate programs as you can that compliment your niche, Gold mines sell hotdogs and coke-a-cola to staff.

The more targetted you are – the better you will be able to give your targeted visitor exactly what they are looking for – WHAT THEY WANT!

This brings me to my product The Revolutionary Internet Marketing System which supplies anyone who emails a request with the relevant info. Like the url to your landing page for an affiliate program.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, Reed. Am enjoying your blog. One thing I found that made a huge difference in my profits as an affiliate marketer is a “dirty little secret” that few people will admit to. That is – ebooks never convert as well as physical products. So while it’s nice to promote Clickbank products if they relate to your niche, don’t neglect promoting physical products just because the checks take longer to arrive. When I switched over to mostly promoting physical products instead of chasing after yet another lame, over-promoted Clickbank ebook to sell, my profits rose by over 50%. Since then I’ve been able to get a portfolio of profitable affiliate sites going. These days I ignore Clickbank unless I find something unique to promote which few affiliates know about. (Hint: just because a product has a low gravity doesn’t mean it’s not high quality or well-converting! 🙂

Anyway, thanks for the great info here.

Reed, don’t forget to mention other products someone may become an “affiliate” for. Most of us would understand that digital information products are what you are referring to but also, I would like to point out, are the referral programs many online retail businesses offer. Take a look at ShareaSale.com and CJ.com for physical products in a multitude of categories. I have affiliate commissions for clothing, gifts, pet products, collegiate gear and more that allow me to diversify markets and sell without inventory or fulfillment.
Affiliate programs are not just for the internet marketer to sell downloadable products. Certainly ClickBank is number one for that. But don’t forget to mention the many affiliate networks offering additional income streams that compliment (or completely represent) your product lines.

Hey Reed, It is very true what you say. I personally jumped from program to program and wondered why nothing seemed to work. And more importantly why everbody was making money except for me. I had trouble with the fact that it’s so much information and sometimes complicated. This guy says you have to do this, the other guy says to never do what the other guy just said I should do. To be honest I couldn’t make out wich was the head and where was the tail. Only to conclude that both were a total scam and only after my money. And boy, did I waste time on some of those fake ptc’s, I can’t believe how ignorant I was. Now any program I encounter I do a quick program+scam check on the search engines. Saves me lots of time and wallet-ache! Now I have come to the point where I can affiliate any product and make money of it at no cost in no time. Strange but true as I came to understand how it works in the fineprints. I could sell you one shoe-string, show you how to use it and how to sell it yourself. The biggest nut to crack was the amount of time I wanted to invest in my business. It does require your attention before you can let it run on autopilot. Also I didn’t have much money to start with so I took a 3000€ loan and blew all that money on affiliate programs and forex trading. There I said it, I lost money allright but I learned none the less. Mananging money was new to me especially with a credit card you can just zip and be on your way. But here come the creditters, bills and other expenses and I really was in too deep. Beeing without a job or just my weekend job at the loungebar, I knew I wouldn’t be able to pay them. So I did something different, something that comes natural to human mind. I prayed, I prayed to Lord I would get massive traffic to the sites I owned. And it’s kinda like a miracle but there it was, the answer, the one thing I forgot to do and should do in all parts of my life. Pray! So I prayed for discipline, for concentration, for patience, and for a better financial status. I always gave to charity but now I can just give more and plenty of it. Thanks for the confirmation in your post and a have a blessed day!

I have to agree with Vladimir.

I’m in Australia, and it costs something like $20 per foreign cheque I cash. Currently I have a cheque for $5, and another for $40 to be cashed – despite specifically requesting PayPal and being told that would happen. Not happy.

I promote a number of programs, and make a ‘reasonable’ amount from them – in one of the niches I’m involved in. Nothing like enough to earn a full-time living, but enough to buy the little extras.

I consistently promote around seven programs, and they’re the ones that make money for me. The rest are very much hit and miss.

I’ve been doing this for about six years, but making money for only three. It’s certainly not an easy business.

John, one option to find affiliates is to use Clickbank, but there are others around. (I find Clickbank to be very high when it comes to fees.)

What is your product? Feel free to email me privately.

Using my method I find that I am getting more response from only 3 or 4. For these, I am putting in more effort. Most of my clients come from Click Bank, Commission Junction, and 3 or 4 other such organizations. My commissions range from 3 to 75%. There can be quite waiting period for collecting the commissions. It can be fun.

Ooops, I also meant to say that when I started out I promoted a lot of high ticket products.

One in particular paid out $100 per sale. (It was a $300 physical product) I ran a huge campaign, did a review, had solos and so on.

I sold a total of three over a period of a couple of weeks. Bottom line: I find it’s better to promote products that carry a lower ticket price and sell more of those than try to go for the big ticket stuff.

As an example, one of the niche ebooks I promote is a constant seller. I get $6-48 (50%) for every sale, and practically every time I advertise it in my newsletter I sell 10-15 copies. That’s almost $100 for 15 copies.

Recently I’ve promoted a product that sells for about $70. There’s a 50% commission, and I’ve sold over ten copies, and it’s still selling because I’m still promoting. The product is fantastic, and the customer service is incredible.

Despite the fact this product is higher priced, it works extremely well for my target audience, so it was pretty easy to sell. Again I reviewed the product (as I do with everything I promote), and from my personally written promotional material, my very loyal subscribers saw the benefits THEY WOULD DERIVE. (I hate using the same materials everyone else is using.)

My preference is always to promote these low ticket items – simply because people can afford them. And that’s the bottom line really; if people can’t afford what you’re promoting, then you won’t make a brass razoo.

I make more money over time because I position myself to earn a percentage of the profits I help generate with internet marketing. If they don’t want hands on help, I offer a written plan of action which includes affiliate links to ebooks, software, autoresponders and hosting. One week I tested a slew of daily $$$ with adwords on one of the url’s and the sales came in like miracles. But the cost was greater than the profit so I put the adwords account on hold. You said the right thing. In order to make a huge amount of money you have to work hard, over all in the beginning when you don’t have enough experience.

If you work hard and with dedication it will pay off in exponential rewards.

On the other hand, starting with only one affiliate program is crucial. If you try to make money from several affiliate programs you’ll end up confused and probably making no money.

Pick one program and stick to it, when you are achieving great results then you can start joining more affiliate programs… that’s the key.

    Hallo Reed,
Adding only this little text to your article to give you and your readers a litle kick what is possible about Ads, clickbank and working as affiliate and answering your question about how many checks from affiliate marketing do you want? my answer >unlimited<
In what is perhaps the most shocking announcement made in some time regarding the vast world of the Internet, a New York doctor has just released a very private “secret” he’s been using since the earliest days of targeted paid advertising at search engines.

He admitted without hesitation that he’s gotten over $87 million in pay-per-click advertising over the last nearly 8 years at such search engines as Google, Overture, MSN, Yahoo and others, and resulting in his having amassed a $300 million fortune!

In the past 2 years alone he’s netted over $166 million as a result of what he calls a very simple “oversight” promoters online have altogether missed.

So valuable this “oversight” has proven that he’s finally decided to share it with the rest of us.

And his timing couldn’t be better!…

    – Since going public Google’s ads haven’t become any cheaper!
    – Other paid-for search engine advertising at large is rising faster than inflation can keep up!

“Back in the day” even an affiliate could just go to some website, sign up free to sell some product (such as with Amazon stores or the vast ebooks at ClickBank) and then just place a small 4-line pay-per-click ad, fine tune it, and then sit back and make money on autopilot.

But with rising costs this is getting much, much harder, and has literally seen the demise of many, many affiliate businesses go completely under.

But now with the release of this New Englander’s super-secret, webmasters, promoters, both big and small business owners, as well as affiliates with shoestring budgets are back in the game!

When asked why he kept this “oversight” secret, the New Yorker responded “I knew I had a good thing, quite possibly a monopoly over any market I cared to try … I made a success of 16 web businesses in less than a decade … do you honestly blame me? …”

But now he’s decided to share his know-how as he knows that doing so doesn’t take a single dollar away from his $300 million fortune, and it won’t cause widespread usage to the degree that it will even put a dent in search engine activity.

To be sure the good doctor had the sense to consult several Internet experts and “macroeconomists” just to be on the safe side.

Additionally, you should know that nothing about his secret either robs search engines (so you don’t have to fear Google coming after you!) or is anything about it illegal in any other way.

What you may even find strangely surprising about his secret is the fact that it actually “helps” search engines make even more money! (You’ll have to see it for yourself to understand how this is actually possible!)

So if you think you’re smarter than most people, then here’s your chance to prove it to everybody else! Just grab the good doctor’s secret for yourself at:

But I feel it only fair to warn you that this doctor fellow from New England is a tad eccentric and self-admittedly “moody” and he’s threatened to withdraw this secret at some point soon without so much as a single day’s notice … (Northerners!)

So if I were you I’d not take any chances because although he may keep it available for the next 2 months, he may also take it off the market just 2 days from now (and then you’ll kick yourself saying “Dad-gummit! I knew I should have grabbed that when I had the chance!” … so don’t let this happen).

    Also keep this in mind…
    ———————————–
How many times since the commercial release of the Worldwide-Web have you seen sudden “breakthroughs” of great fortune-making potential come and go where just a few people were in the right place at the right time to be able to take advantage of them? — You’re right … very, very few.

So don’t overlook this email as it may very well prove to be one of the most influential and important ones you’ve ever received…

@Peter that is way to much of an advertisement for this, I’m disabling your link. DO NOT do that again or I’ll block your access.

    Great article Reed.

That was MY first mistake when I started in IM… I joined 1001 affiliate programs and did nothing because then it became overwhelming.

Then I started one by one promoting the ones I hand picked and then started making money 🙂

    Take care.
